I hope that you will enjoy this one! :-) I have to thank Rob again!! for including my guide with Roblist!!! :- I would like to thank my Internet Access folks, namely Patrick Oberem. I'll also like to thank the gang again! Namely Elaine Coaton, Chantel Williams, Luisa Santana, JP Rowely, Donovan Gush, Paul Holmes, Grant Durr, Clinton Visser, Richard Vine, Catherine Livingstone, Matthew J Strattford, Kieth Fox, Michelle Wentworth, Ruth Goddard, Shannon Roberts, Jeanette Holmes, Michael Akkerman, Paul Brilleman, Tim Nicol, Alistar Payne, Yvona Ford, Karen Twine, Eugene Mansour, Charlene Etherigde, Dianne Tappan, Kim Drew, and Shevon Etheridge. soapie The Most Important Woman That Ever Existed TMIWTEE, Blue Eyes, has been sick recently on two different occasions. Met her friend "stick insect", who is really out of this world. She has wierd interests and has a bad habbit of having flings on the sidelines with her boyfriend. Paul is currently having an excellent time in England playing cricket!! My next door neigbour is also in England. The WWW connection has gone down for some work. Someone killed the settings for PPP and I'm unhappy. The PPP account one of lifes little joys!!! :-) I saw quite a few decent pages. I got PPP to work :-) It works quite well (better than before), and usually logs in first time round. UUPC/extended does not hangup the modem correctly so need to create a OBHack to fix the problem. Kim got her Std six biology class high on ether, as she had forgotten to open the Science lab windows. Amazing!!! Student teachers sometimes are very forgetful!!! (So am I!!! Dave should have noticed by now!!!!!!!!!!) I am trying to setup a FreeBSD (Un*x) on my spare computer that is litterally lying around in a plastic bag. So far I'm still waiting for the disks from my cousin, who is extreemly forgetful. I'm struggeling with getting Jacques Marneweck's Guide to the Internet Interactive out this month, so no promises, but I'll try my very hardest (with what free time I have), to get it out. It is under construction!!! (Believe it or not!!! :-)) I've notices that David's Readme Complier requires a ^C character to get it to change colours, it is a nightmare using the standard DOS editor. I'm currently arranging World Wide Web pages for PlumHS, but getting time to work on them is quite difficult -- I seem to be too busy doing other things. It should be up around the 20th at the latest, as we are busy, entering all the data. The JMGII ones are also being setup, as I've had to read technical documentation on how and where to stuff the pages, as I incorrectly had them in /usr/home/plumhs when they should have been in /usr/home/plumhs/public_html but we do learn from our mistakes!! The first edition of Jacques Marneweck's Guide to the Internet Interactive has been delayed - can't get round to finishing it. :-( Got a few of the pages ready. What I'll do is ftp it up, and then use http://www.wcape.school.za/~plumhs/jmgii/jmgii.html as the URL for it around the 20th. August was so busy, I forgot to send JMGI to Rob Fisher to be included with Roblist so this month, we have a "double edition!!!" It is huge!!! It hogs a 1.44 MB stiffie disk!!! (With the Interactive Stuff!!!) I went on a NetWare training course, and was able to put faces to the names of the postmasters out there on the WCSN, who I've never even seen before, some of them were not all that friendly. I've been falsly accused by the Testtube and the scottie dog. Gee life was great till the deformation of character. Still thinking of suing them ladies. Boy don't you just get extreemly irrotated with now it alls, who think that you are trying to break into a Novell NetWare LAN, and trying to steal passwords, and a hacker (well she was refuring to CRACKER, - a hacker is a programmer), and most of all I use my own personal login account. Some people are really weird. Maybe I should get them to publicly appologise to me!!! SABC TV here I come!!! :-) Blue eyes has been sick again!! I would love to know how she does it?!?!?!? It seems that I'm never sick and she is always. Well I was sick on the one day last week and it was terrible, I prefer to be up and about than sick in bed, with a bucket next to me. Stick Insect is getting to be better than boring. TMIWTEE is getting nicer to know, amazingly enough. Her sister and I get on okay. Well got another e-mail address WEBMASTER@plumhs.wcape.school.za, which seems to be working!! As you may ave already noticed, this edition, is a bumper edition!!! Last month, the days just flew by. On the first I still thought I had three days to get JMGI out. Thanks to Donovan Gush, BRAINS, NateDogg, James Rogers, Super-User, The Gremlin, Root Man for the fan mail!!! I feel like publishing some of it!!! Fan mail, complaints, will reach me Jacques Marneweck at JACMAR@plumhs.wcape.school.za. What actually amazed me was that I got two appology letters from pupils at other schools on the WCSN for the one was a rude letter and the other one was an abusive letter. Keep on reading this publication! Regards Jacques Marneweck ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ 2. Cool World Wide Web Sites ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ Next month, I am going to allow _you_ the reader, to submit your entries for the "Coolest WWW Site". Mailing Lists ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ I have come across a few mailing lists this month, apart from my JMGI mailing list: EDLAW listserv@ukcc.uky.edu ('subscribe EDLAW') "Tis mailing list deals with Education and Law" JMGI jacmar@plumhs.wcape.school.za (`subscribe JMGI') "Jacques Marneweck's Guide to the Internet distribution list, for those who want a copy of JMGI monthly. Also, in the future, Roblist, will be sent off aswell from this distribution list." [Quick note: Those who were on the mailing list before July will have to resubscribe due to the change in systems :-(] Junior-Chat majordomo@picasso.wcape.school.za (subscribe Junior-Chat') "The junior-chat mailing list is for students in Primary schools. It is gatewayed to the wcs.students.chat.junior newsgroup, which has a bidirectional gateway setup between the newsgroup and the mailing list." Senior-Chat majordomo@picasso.wcape.school.za (subscribe Senior-Chat') "The senior-chat mailing list is for students in High schools. is gatewayed to the wcs.students.chat.senior newsgroup, which has a bidirectional gateway setup between the newsgroup and the mailing list." Students majordomo@picasso.wcape.school.za (subscribe Students') "The students mailing list is for students in Primary and High schools. Internet News ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ Picasso thrashes PLUMHS system (and others) Picasso, the Western Cape Schools' Network host machine, started to send 308 or so "Subscribe" letters to all the members of the STUDENTS mailing list. Western Cape Schools' Network chairman, Jocelyn Wrensh spent some time deleting the files out of schools spool directories, as litterallly millions of them were on Picasso. A pity, that it took 2 hours to download all the e-mail including the "subscribe" messages. (Should have phoned in during the next day!!! :-D) I landed up getting a stack of complaints about this from people on the list in Gauteng and P.E. Some idiot, decided to subscribe STUDENTS@wcape.school.za to the STUDENTS MAILING list which's address is STUDENTS@wcape.school.za or STUDENTS@picasso.wcape.school.za as picasso.wcape.school.za is wcape.school.za for mail delivery and news collection. Apparently some brainless idiot subscribed to the students mailing list, and decided to subscribe as students@wcape.school.za, which created Picasso, to continously send the subscription message to the mailing list, until the problem was sorted out, thanks to Mr David Rogers, for notifing Jocelyn Wrensch. Hare.7750 virus spread via the Internet Remember the 22 August and 22 September, as these are the dates that it activates. It apparenlty terminates all of your data. A few machines world wide did not get an anti-virus programme for the new virus, so they lost all their data. Free anti-virus programmes are available, for this use. Plumstead High School, got an anti-virus programme, that has a wierd way of checking, it first checks the drive that the programme loads from, then it rescans the drive and looks at the Novell NetWare server Socrates's Hard Drive. Pretty useful anti-virus programme, but a bit slow. Also, the virus has been spread from the USENET Sex related newsgroups. Kiddie Porn on the .Net endup caught by cybercops Thirteen members of a kiddie-porn ring that operated via the net have been arrested in nine states in the US. Other members of the ring are in Canada, Finland and Australia. The operated a chat room on the net called the Orchid Club, where they swapped pictures. The girls abused were a five year old and a ten year old. Scotland Yard crackdown on .Net Pornography Scotland Yard, has issued an ultimatum about getting tough on Internet pornography to the British ISPs (Internet Service Providers) or to face prosecution. The newly-formed Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has teamed up with the Metropolitan Police. Scotland Yard, is busy compiling a list of newsgroups, containing pornography, for Britian's +60 ISP's to ban access to. Microsoft and Yahoo! have teamed up The Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo! Inc, have recently announced that they are working together to make searcing the WWW easier for users of Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0. As part of this aggreement, Yaoo! will be the default provider for WWW search results for Microsoft's new Autosearch feature, available in the Microsoft Explorer v3.0, and will distribute a customised version of the browser for Yahoo!. Users downloading Microsoft Internet Explorer v3.0 from Yahoo!, will be given the option to get Yahoo!'s home page set up the default home page loaded every time Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 is loaded. Bill Gates gone crazy??? Microsoft Corp. President and CEO, Bill Gates, has dedicated a site called at the URL http://www.babygates.com to his daughter Jennifer Katherine Gates. The idea of using a wierd photo is not my kinda style!!! It looks if they are trying to deage a microsoft employee!! Also, the child is wearing glasses and remarks about using Microsoft Internet Explorer to pay for contact lenses!!! Reuter Women taped illegally and films sold on WWW Boston, USA. A court has ordered a man selling video tapes showing women changing in locker rooms, using bathrooms or showering. Robert Novello has been barred from promoting his "Voyeur Videos" on the WWW. These tapes were made without the women's consent using hidden video cameras. Investigators are still trying to figure out where the videos were made. JMGII has WWW subdomain Jacques Marneweck's Guide to the Internet, has got it's own domain - jmgi.marneweck.wcape.school.za and to send comments to the author, send e-mail to , or or . Soon, I may get installed an analogue line to my ISP, if the phone bill for e-mail reaches over R200 per month for the e-mail connection. ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ 5. Tips for Windows ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ If you cannot afford Windows 95, get hold of a copy of Wayfarer. It's freeware, and can give you a sorta Windows 95 look in Windows 3.x. If using Windows 3.x and Windows 95, and have a Novell NetWare 4.1 file server, you can use the NAL (NetWare Application Launcher) to allow users to use whatever programmes, that you assign their container, group, of user name. Windows Commander, is a nifty replacement for File Manager and Windows explorer. It can do much more than Windows Explorer and File Manger put together. The version works on Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows NT. ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ 6. In the next editions, I'll be adding a few pointers, on some of the services available with the Internet eg. email, newsgroups, gopher, WWW etc. Getting World Wide Web Pages via E-mail ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can get world wide web pages via e-mail, I used to do this before I got a PPP/SLIP connection with a few friends: You can send a message to an Agora World Wide Web mail-server: agora@mail.w3.org agora@www.undp.org All you basicly need to know is the Uniform Resourse Locator (URL) eg. http://www.wcape.school.za or ftp://risc.ua.edu/network/pegasus/ The Uniform Resourse Locator is basically ftp:// http:// gopher:// news: Now when someone says that you must check out a certain World Wide Web page eg. http://www.somewhere.out.there.org.za/some/wierd/page.html you can now go and read that page via e-mail. The body of your e-mail message must include one of these lines, replacing the word "" with the actual URL of the page that you would like to be recieving: send This will send you via e-mail the document you have requested, with a list of all the documents referenced within, so that you may make further requests. deep This send the document that you requested, and all the documents that the document had references to. This could mean that you have lots of data coming your way. You can also lookup Usenet newsgroup postings from the World Wide Web mail-server. Here are a fre examples: send news:za.environment (returns a list of recent postings) deep news:za.environment (returns a list AND all the postings, this can be a HECK OF A LOT of data!!!!) Please note: The World Wide Web mail-servers are sometimes unavailable for days (or weeks or months) at a time without any explaination. If you an error or no reply, please retry in a day or so and maybe you will be lucky and get an answer from the Agora World Wide Web Mail-server. ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ 10.
